Kibera lies in the city of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and is the largest slum in Africa. It is a place where we believe a bright future is possible because of the special people we are in contact with there.

Kibera is growing rapidly and while exact numbers are hard to come by, best current estimates suggest a population of 500,000 live within its fixed boundaries.  This number is growing.

Many people in Kibera are ready and willing to develop the area and themselves for the better. There are cultural initiatives, children´s projects, and churches of different faiths – Christian and Muslim communities, each with their own activities.  One can really feel life and movement in Kibera, and the momentum of change is palpable.

Kibera was built when Kenya was a British colony and was originally used as a camp for soldiers from Nubia. (See Wikipedia entry for Kibera).  There are many problems needing to be solved here, but one thing is clear: the people of Kibera, especially the children, continue to strive for their basic rights to a home, a haven, a place to play and a place from which they can realize a future of their choosing.

We want to help them on this path.  We are convinced that the way the world responds to Kibera today is how we will live together as a world tomorrow.  We hope it will be in solidarity and with humanity.
